Penang Hotels Expected More Tourists From Mideast

According to Malaysia Association of Hotels (Penang Chapter) chairman Marco Battistotti, who is also G Hotel general manager, Penang is set to see an increase of 8-10 per cent in Middle East tourism arrivals this year, compared with 85,000 Middle Eastern visitors it welcomed in 2008. Most of them are from Saudi Arabia, Iran, United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. It seems that this will benefit the Penang hotels sector especially Penang Island hotels.

According to him, the estimation is based on the bookings received during the recent Arabian Travel Mart 2009 in Dubai.

The holiday season for Middle Eastern tourists to Malaysia is between June and October. Favourite holiday destinations in Malaysia for Arab tourists by ranking is Kuala Lumpur, Genting Highlands and Penang.

The expected daily average spending (excluding hotel and air fare) of a Middle Eastern tourist in Penang is US$80 (RM283) and they tend to have vacation between 5 and 7 days per visit on the Penang island between 5 and 7 days per visit.

The MAH Penang Chapter is made up of 38 hotels which fall into the three-, four- and five-star categories and a total of 9,000 rooms.
