Penang Island Bon Odori

Penang Island Bon OdoriAt July 18 of 2009, the Bon Odori festival event will be held at the Esplanade of Penang Island from 5pm to 11pm. This is the 13th time in Penang, is expected to attract more than 50,000 people.

This event was jointly organised by the Penang state government and the Japanese Consulate, and supported by the Penang Japanese Association (PJA), Malaysian-Japanese Society (MJS), Japan Graduates’ Association of Malaysia (JAGAM), Penang Japanese Language Society and Association for Overseas Technical Scholarship (AOTS).

Bon Odori is a Japanese traditional summer dance celebration where people perform folk dances to show appreciation for family and ancestors as well as to welcome ancestral spirits to earth.

During this festival, there will have the Bon Odori dance performances by the PJA, MJS and Penang Japanese Language Society. Besides there will also have a drum performance by the PJS, a 10-minute fireworks display at 10pm and over 80 stalls selling food, souvenirs and providing games

The yukata, a type of summer kimono, will be sold at the event for RM200. Visitors can wear the costume and have their picture taken for a fee of RM10.
